In your journey to understand and harness the power of intuition, it’s essential to recognize that it’s not just some mystical concept reserved for a select few, like psychic mediums. Intuition is an inherent gift that resides within each of us, waiting to be awakened and honed. Often referred to as your “gut feeling,” “instinct,” or “inner knowing,” intuition communicates through what some call the clair senses.

As mentioned in a recent post, your clair senses—aligned with your five physical senses—serve as conduits for intuitive messages. Sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste become channels through which your intuition speaks to you, offering insights, guidance, and sometimes even warnings. But understanding these messages and strengthening your intuitive muscles isn’t always a straightforward process. It requires awareness, practice, and a willingness to tune in to the subtle whispers of your inner voice.

To make sure we’re all on the same page, let’s take a moment to revisit the basics of clair senses. Of course, if you missed last month’s blog post, you can catch up and read more here, along with examples of how Jess experienced intuitive messages (and spirit encounters!) through her clair abilities. It will help you understand the clair senses more in depth, so you’re ready to strengthen your own intuitive trust muscles. Below are the clair senses and their intuitive connections:

  • Clairvoyance is clear seeing.
  • Clairaliance is clear smelling.
  • Clairsentience is clear feeling.
  • Clairgustance is clear tasting.
  • Claircognizance is clear knowing.

Listening to your inner voice, especially if you’re accustomed to seeking answers from others, can pose challenges. While some confidently rely on their intuition to guide decisions, others may find it difficult to navigate their inner guidance system, especially if they identify as workaholics, people pleasers, overachievers, or overthinkers. Seeking external validation, succumbing to anxiety or fear, or constantly proving oneself can hinder trust in one’s intuition. However, the good news is that everyone possesses intuitive gifts, and just as you strengthen your muscles at the gym, you can nurture and develop your intuition.

Now that you understand your clairsenses, let’s dive into 3 ways to strengthen your intuitive muscles!

1. Get curious about your patterns

Are you a self-proclaimed people-pleaser or always looking for others for answers? We wear so many masks to survive and cope, going through life to soothe wounds, but what are we really doing? We’re avoiding patterns that no longer serve us. They get in the way of trusting your intuition. If you’re always depending on others or tending to their needs before your own, how will you have the mental or emotional capacity to trust yourself when you really need to?

It’s time to get curious about your patterns. Patterns stem from early programming, typically developed in childhood. Beliefs and conditioning originating in childhood become deeply rooted in your subconscious mind, appearing as a driving force behind thoughts, actions, and behaviors. They show up until you’re ready to decide to keep them around because they help you or do the inner work to rewire and build new neural pathways to better serve you, cultivating the life you want for yourself. An example of a pattern I released was people pleasing…doing everything for everyone before my own needs. For a long time, I allowed others to take my energy, leaving me tired, exhausted, and grouchy. Now I check in with my boundaries before I say yes to others.

2. Look inward for answers

Once you’ve done the inner work, rewiring, releasing, and reprogramming, looking inward will be easier for you. As a people pleaser, overthinking, or self-proclaimed worrier, you may have lived life thinking about what others think or future tripping, and that mental clutter makes it difficult to listen to your intuition. Your intuition comes from a loving place, often appearing as a whisper or a quiet knowing. How do you look inward for answers? There are a number of ways you can turn to yourself, your inner knowing to guide your path. Journaling, recording yourself talking about what’s on your mind, talking with a trusted friend who can hold space for you, or listening to guided meditations are good starting points.

3. Listen to your body

Your body is one of the best intuitive tools you can tap into – anytime, anywhere – and at no expense. It holds the answers to challenging questions, situations, and relationships, but you have to take time to listen and trust what its guidance is telling you. When you’re facing a difficult decision to make, this is a perfect opportunity to check in with your body. How? Find quiet space to focus on your body. You may take some time for breathwork and stretching to relax your mind and body first. Once you feel more at ease, ask a question aloud. See how it feels in your body. Are you having a visceral reaction? Do you feel calm? Is there a place inside your body that you’re starting to feel sensations? Maybe there are some red alarms sounding to tell you to steer clear of the situation.

To give you an idea of how my body shares guidance, here’s a situational example. When I’m experiencing overwhelm and there’s too much on my plate, I have two paths I can take: schedule in time to slow down (I re-energize with silence and quiet time to relax) or keep pushing through, despite my exhaustion (a behavior I learned growing up – work before play, they say). Every time I choose the latter, I become grumpy, short tempered, and anxious. When I push too far, my body forces me to stop through illness. However, if I integrate my body awareness into my daily living, I am keenly aware of my time and energy. I choose to stick with my boundaries, delegate tasks and responsibilities, and take time to connect with my needs. In this way, I don’t crash and burn from simply living life.

Let’s take a few moments to reflect upon how you might start tuning into and developing your intuition:

Embracing curiosity about your patterns is the first step towards meaningful change. These patterns, rooted in childhood programming, shape your subconscious and influence your thoughts, actions, and behaviors. As you do the inner work of releasing and reprogramming these patterns, looking inward for answers becomes more natural. Shifting from external validation to self-guidance can help clear mental clutter and enhance your intuition. Engaging in practices like journaling, speaking your thoughts aloud, confiding in a trusted friend, or following guided meditations can all facilitate this inward journey.

Remember your body is a powerful intuitive tool that provides invaluable insights. By tuning in to its signals, you can navigate challenging decisions and situations with greater clarity and confidence. Listening to your body’s wisdom requires practice and trust, but it is an accessible and effective way to find answers within yourself. As you cultivate these habits of introspection and bodily awareness, you’ll be better equipped to lead a life aligned with your true self, making decisions that support your well-being and happiness.
